1. How is what you see during stage hypnosis different from Hypnotherapy?

I can remember when I was younger and first saw people embarrassing themselves on stage under hypnosis, I thought to myself: 'How can this be a beneficial therapy?' But forget swinging pendulums and animal impersonations because hypnotherapy is in fact very different from stage hypnosis. Rather than triggering you to act out of character then forget what you've done which stage hypnotists do by embedding a command to this effect. Hypnotherapy works with your intentions and subconscious knowledge to help you overcome a block, work through a problem or to help you achieve a specific goal.

2. What's the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a deep state of relaxation. If you've tried meditation or yoga, you may have experienced something like it, as these can induce a mild form of hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is the process that takes you into this relaxed state and combines it with therapy to help you let go of those negative thoughts and feelings, and replace them with positive ones.

3. But how exactly does hypnotherapy work?

The therapist uses a form of words that encourages the mind to relax, giving you access to your subconscious and allowing a prime time to suggest things to it. But the key point is, that it is you who allows your mind to go into this state; a hypnotherapist can neither induce it nor keep you in a state of hypnosis against your will. Going into hypnosis relies on your interest and willingness to be guided into this different state of consciousness.

4. How can hypnosis help me?

Many people find hypnotherapy helps them get on top of one particular aspect of their lives, such as improving their confidence and self-esteem; feeling free from anxiety and panic attacks; tackling a specific challenge such as public speaking, an interview, or a driving test; achieving long-term goals such as losing weight, smoking cessation or nail-biting; beating a fear; or simply moving on from not believing they can succeed. It is basically an extremely effective form of life coaching with over 200 positive applications available.

5. Will I have to relive traumatic events from my past during hypnotherapy?

Not necessarily, but if you feel there's a time or event that affects how you are now, it can be helpful to revisit it. You can decide this with your therapist's help. For example, you may go back to your first day of school, when you may have felt abandoned, rejected, frightened and insecure after being left there by a parent you implored not to leave you. Or maybe you'll go back to when you were eleven years old and overheard your parent's friend comparing you unfavorably with a sibling.

Hypnotherapy can give you surprisingly immediate links with past and present personal circumstances. Constructively and positively, you discover that it was as painful and traumatic for your parents to leave you on that first day at school as it was for you. It did not mean they were abandoning you; they still loved you in the same way.

6. Will I lose control while I’m hypnotized?

No hypnotherapy is a process of negotiation and persuasion. You are in control each and every step of the way. You are very aware of everything both you and your therapist say and in most cases you will remember everything said. You will not do anything, or act in any way, that is contrary to what you would do in full conscious awareness. It is very different from stage hypnosis, where the hypnotist embeds in the subconscious a command that causes people to act differently and not to remember what they did.

7. How long does it take to see results using hypnotherapy?

With hypnotherapy you can usually start to see results after your very first session. Each session lasts on average between 45min to 75min with the number of sessions required generally varying anywhere from three to eight depending on what you set out to achieve.

8. Will I remember everything after a hypnotherapy session?

Do you usually remember everything that happens? Your memory will work as it usually does, except that you will find it easier to access memories. Generally speaking most people do remember either everything or certain parts of the experience.  You will find that suggestions which have been given to you in hypnosis will resurface in your conscious thinking mind after your hypnosis session and these will be the thoughts that produce positive changes in your behavior or way of thinking and feeling.

9. How do I know that I will wake up from hypnosis?

No-one has ever remained in hypnosis indefinitely.  Even if something were to happen to the hypnotherapist halfway through the session, you would still 'come out' of the trance state once rapport had been broken or you would simply fall asleep to awaken later refreshed.

10. Are there any side effects from hypnosis?

The only side effects are the beneficial ones of feeling more relaxed afterwards and feeling more positive about whatever it was you sought hypnotherapy for.  Hypnosis is a perfectly natural state of awareness that offers a host of positive benefits for those that choose to participate.

11. What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness during which our subconscious mind is more open and receptive to suggestions that are given.  We drift in and out of different levels of awareness many times each day, absorbing information on a subliminal level as well as consciously.  Your hypnotherapist will work with your powers of intelligence, imagination and concentration on a subconscious level to help you achieve your goals.

12. How does it feel to be hypnotized?

Everyone is different.  Some people say that their body feels like a lead weight, others say they feel as though they're floating away.  Most people will agree that it's a lovely feeling because they are more relaxed then they have ever been before.

13. Can I be hypnotized against my will?

No, anyone can resist being hypnotized and it won't work.  Hypnosis is cooperation between two people - your therapist will show you the way and you can choose if you want to go there or not. Always feel free to talk about any questions or worries you may have about hypnosis anytime. We utilize hypnosis because it allows us a very good way of communicating with the sub-conscious and the communication is constructed according to the outcome you wish to achieve. So come prepared to go into a nice deep state of hypnosis and you will benefit that much faster from your sessions.

14. Why are people so skeptical of hypnosis?
Some people are skeptical of hypnotherapy because they associate it with stage hypnosis, it is important to remember that what you see on the stage is simply a show, and NOT therapy. People think that we have the ability to take control over the clients mind and have them do anything; however we know that this is not the case in reality.  In fact you can not be made to do anything against your values, morals or beliefs.

15. How does hypnosis work?

There is much speculation about hypnosis and hypnotherapy and how it works; all that we really know with certainty is that being in such a relaxed and focused state allows us to bypass the conscious critical faculty of the mind to engender the positive changes that you truly desire within your life.

16. Will I be forced to accept suggestions during hypnotherapy?

No, you will accept suggestions which are only for your benefit and only those you choose to accept. The suggestions you receive will be formulated according to the needs and desires that you present in speaking to your hypnotherapist.

17. Will hypnosis force me to say anything against my will?

No, you can not be forced to say or for that matter do anything against your will using hypnosis. It is important to remember that while in hypnosis your values, morals and beliefs are still very much intact.

18. Can someone’s mind be too strong for hypnosis to be effective?

No, in fact, the stronger your mind, the more easily able you are to go into the lovely state of hypnosis. It wouldn’t make sense to think that a person of high intelligence would be in any way hindering their attempts of self-fulfillment by being to smart!

19. Will hypnotherapy change my personality?
No. What hypnotherapy does is to help bring out the best in you. This means that you will change by leaving behind any habits or baggage you no longer need or want and thereby become a stronger and much happier person. Hypnosis will not put something into you that was not there in the first place. It just helps you to uncover your strong and good qualities, which you may not even be aware of consciously.

20. How safe is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a normal, naturally occurring, healthy state of mind. It is totally drug free. There has never been a single documented case of harm resulting from the responsible use of hypnosis. In fact Dr David Cheek, MD, who has vast experience in the field, writes, "We can do more harm with ignorance of hypnotism than we can ever do by intelligently using hypnosis and suggestion constructively".

21. Is hypnosis dangerous?

Absolutely not! Hypnosis was approved by the American Medical Association in September of 1958 as a safe practice with no harmful side effects. To date, no one has been seriously hurt with hypnosis. We sometimes can greatly underestimate the ability of the subconscious to protect itself from harm. The only dangers are in misconceptions promoted by fundamentalist leaders who wish to frighten while disempowering their followers. Far too often fear and ignorance have caused more people to hurt themselves and/or others, when wide awake, than would ever occur in a hypnotherapy session.

22. Is hypnotherapy a form of mind control?

NO, you will never lose control of your mind! You can not be made to do anything against your beliefs, religion, morals, or values using hypnosis!

23. Can hypnosis cause me to act against my will?

NO, During Clinical Hypnotherapy you will never be asked to do anything against your will. In fact if at any time you want to emerge from the hypnotic state, for any reason, you will instantly and naturally, open your eyes and become fully alert.

24. Can anyone be hypnotized?
YES, if the individual chooses to participate. Our centre will not hypnotize children under six unless determined mature, adults with a medical situation like epilepsy or those whose brain function has been affected by drugs or alcohol.

25. Does the process of hypnotherapy require a weak mind?

NO, hypnotic susceptibility is not an indication of a weak mind or lack of intelligence. In most cases your intelligence level will actually work to your advantage so long as you wish to participate!

26. Will I remember my hypnotherapy session?

YES, if you wish to remember the hypnotherapy session in most cases you will unless your conscious mind chooses not to. The choice is always yours and you can rest assured that your subconscious mind will do what is in your best interest.

27. What does hypnosis feel like?
Because hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, or awareness, at no time will you be asleep or unaware of what is going on. A feeling of peace, serenity and well being generally accompany this most relaxing experience.

28. Does hypnotherapy contradict religion?

NO, In fact contemporary hypnotists trace its history directly back to the 18th century priest Father Gassner, whose work influenced Mesmer. While a few groups still misunderstand the nature of hypnotism and regard it with suspicion, most religious communities gladly use hypnotic techniques for prayer, healing, spiritual development, and personal growth.

30. Are there harmful after effects using hypnotherapy?
No. There is not one case on record of anyone being harmed because of, or through, hypnosis. No, not at all. The only 'tool' used to bring about positive change is the natural power of your mind. The hypnotherapist will act as a guide using his voice to help you achieve the desired outcome form your sessions.

37. I've tried countless diets, but still can't lose weight or keep it off.  Can hypnotherapy help me?
Absolutely!  Hypnotherapy for weight loss at the Caduceus Hypnotherapy Centre, aims to 'reprogram' the subconscious into accepting a healthy pattern of eating. People seem to find it interesting, thought-provoking and a very enjoyable and relaxing experience.

38. I’ve tried giving up smoking countless times before, why is hypnotherapy different?
Smoking serves a need to the smoker, a basic necessity which is actually laid down very early in their life: the need of 'oral satisfaction'.  It is something that must be met. When the smoker tries to stop by willpower alone, the need is no longer met, and the person can feel anxious, restless, and irritable.  Usually the need reinforces itself, and the smoking starts all over again.  Curiously, it is this same need which can sometimes cause ex-smokers to put on weight. Hypnotherapy aims to 'reprogram' that need, and channel its energies into feeling pride and pleasure in stopping the smoking habit.  It also aims to counter the possibility of 'symptom substitution', which can lead to overeating, for example.

39. Can hypnotherapy help me control stress?

Yes, hypnotherapy has proven to be very effective in helping people control their daily levels of stress whether at home, at work or on the run. By using hypnosis positive new responses can be created to replace the destructive reactions of the past.

40. What types of problems can hypnotherapy help?

42. I feel a bit 'funny' about going into hypnosis.
There's really no need to feel funny at all. No one is embarrassed about going to see a dentist if they have a problem with a tooth, or consulting a mechanic for car problems, and hypnotherapy is just the same.

There is absolutely no reason someone shouldn't seek professional help for any problems in life.  There is certainly no 'stigma' to be felt when consulting with a professional hypnotherapist.

43. How much does hypnotherapy cost?
The cost of our hypnotherapy programs depends on two things, the goal you wish to achieve, and the number of sessions required for achieving your goal. Our fees are minimal when you consider the long term benefits achieved through your therapy sessions. There are prepaid packages available at a reduced cost and we also have a fast track pay as you go plan for those on a budget.

44. What does hypnosis feel like?
Believe it or not, there will have been many times in your life when you have already felt it, but maybe don't even know about it. Think back to a time when you've been watching a TV program, and before you know it, the program has finished, and, although you were watching, you can't remember how the program ended.   You might say to yourself "I missed that; I was 'miles away'".  You can remember what you were thinking about to make you miss the end of the program, because it had your full concentration.

Hypnosis is like that ... just intense concentration.

45. Can I be controlled during hypnosis?
No, everything you do under hypnosis is done voluntarily. Your ability to decide what you should and shouldn't do is unaffected because your morals are always present.

46. Will I be asleep during hypnosis?
Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not like sleep at all.  It might best be described as half-way between full awaking conscious and sleep.  You are still awake and aware of everything that is happening and being said the whole time, able to think, hear, smell, feel, taste, however you will be so deeply relaxed that you may find yourself drifting into different levels of awareness.  Remember, your subconscious mind is active throughout and it is this that your therapist is working on with you.

47. Will I still need will power using hypnotherapy?
Yes and No.  What I mean is that hypnotherapy is an excellent aid to willpower, but it is not a replacement for it.  The desire to change is also needed... take a smoker, for example, who comes for treatment because they've been pressured into it by their family, but really doesn't want to stop smoking.  Hypnotherapy cannot make you do something against your will. So the bottom line is, if you have a goal your hypnotherapist can help you achieve it.

48. Will I remember my hypnotherapy sessions?
Another misconception is that you won't be able to remember anything that went on during your hypnotherapy sessions. The truth is that you will be able to remember most of it.  Any portions not remembered, will be where your mind has drifted off to some distant thought or memory.

49. Is hypnosis in any way dangerous?
Not at all. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon.  Should an emergency arise during a session, your self-protection mechanism would still function normally, and you would still be able to get up and attend to things as always.

50. How will you hypnotize me?
You will simply be asked to close your eyes and imagine a series of situations where you find your body and mind calming into a wonderful state of deep relaxation.  It's really a gradual process and each time you enter hypnosis usually becomes much easier and more enjoyable for you.

51. Once hypnotized what if I don’t wake up?
You will!  For an example, think of someone listening to a hypnotherapy tape or CD.  They might be half-way through the recording, and be in a very deep state of hypnosis. Suppose then at this point, there is a power cut, and the person never gets to hear the end of the session where the state of normal consciousness is restored. This person will NOT get stuck. One of two things would happen...

Either:

a) The person would simply go to sleep, and wake up normally a while later.

or
b) The person would open their eyes to see what had happened!

52. Can hypnotherapy benefit my golf game?

Yes, it sure can by helping you focus on any area that causes you trouble.  For some people that might be their ability to concentrate effectively, for others the fear of failure… Every situation is unique and an action plan will be developed to suit your needs. Once the root cause has been identified it is simply a matter of addressing it within the subconscious mind. See Hypno-Golf Sessions.
